Roots & Shoots Visits the Biosphere 2!

Roots & Shoots Cleans Up the Neighborhood!

Project MORE Roots & Shoots students wanted to do community service in our school's neighborhood, the Lost Barrio. They decided to spend an afternoon cleaning trash out of the wash that many students walk past to get to school everyday. Good work!

measuring volume

I learned today how to measure volume so that we know how much gravel we need for our beautiful garden.

First we needed to measure the area of our garden - Length x Width. Then to convert it into volume we multiplied our area by the depth. Depth being how high we want the gravel to be.

Now you have the area Volume in cubic feet. To order gravel we converted our number into cubic yards. We divided our volume in cubic feet by 27.

We calculated that we need only one cubic yard of gravel for our first garden area!

Today our group is going to visit some more desert gardens to get some new ideas. Also, we will be digging some holes in front of the schoolyard to prepare to take soil samples.

Plant Research!

Last week we went to Desert Survivors Nursery in Tucson. We learned about different native plants. We got some ideas about what plants we want in our garden. Thanks Claire for showing us around! See http://www.desertsurvivors.org/ for more information.

We've decided on a project!

As a group, we've decided that our project goal is to beautify our school and neighborhood by planting a native desert garden in front of our school. Through the process we will learn about the uniqueness of the Sonoran Desert Ecosystem, the importance of water conservation, teamwork skills, and how to build community support.

Roots & Shoots comes to Project MORE!

A group of adventurous students at Project MORE High School have decided to become part of the first ever Roots & Shoots class! Roots & Shoots was started by the Jane Goodall Institute and is an international organization that promotes student involvement in making their world a better place. Students will decide on a project that positively contributes to the environment, the community or animals and each student will learn from and be responsible for the success of the project throughout the quarter. Our Roots & Shoots group is looking forward to many fun, rewarding and hands-on learning experiences!
